How to Choose the Perfect Workout Schedule: Good, Better, and Best Options for Consistent Results

“Is it bad to have my workouts only separated by one day of rest? Would it be better to have an extra day of rest in between?”

When this question comes up, I respond the same way every time: There’s a good, better, and best case scenario.

Using the example of a 3x/week workout schedule:

  • Good Case Scenario: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
  • Better Case Scenario: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • Best Case Scenario: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

Understanding the Different Scenarios

Good Case Scenario: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

This setup means you’re getting your workouts done in a short span, which can be convenient if you have a busy schedule later in the week. While it’s not ideal for muscle recovery, it’s still effective if it fits into your lifestyle.

Better Case Scenario: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday

This schedule allows for a bit more recovery time between sessions, helping you to perform better in each workout. It’s a middle ground that balances intensity with recovery, making it a solid option for many people.

Best Case Scenario: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

This is the ideal setup for most people because it provides ample rest between each workout session. Your muscles get the necessary recovery time, which can lead to better performance and results in each workout.

Will You See Results with the Good Scenario?

Absolutely. You will STILL see plenty of results even with the “good” scenario! Here’s the thing: good is always better than perfect when good allows for better adherence.

The Importance of Consistency

What do you think is better, doing the “best case scenario” once a month, or the “good case scenario” weekly? Consistency, adherence, and longevity are what will move the needle forward the most.

Unless you are a professional athlete getting paid millions of dollars, you probably can’t plan your days around your meals, recovery, and workouts. However, you can make all three of these work AROUND your schedule!

Sustainability Over Perfection

Is this the most optimal? Is this the “best case scenario”? Probably not. But is it sustainable? Will you still get incredible results? Absolutely.

Good beats best when good allows for consistency, adherence, and follow-through.

Don’t be a fitness flash in the pan. Aim for the long, slow burn that creates lifestyle changes lasting a lifetime. By finding a workout schedule that fits your life, you ensure that you can stick with it for the long haul.

Conclusion

Whether you opt for the good, better, or best case scenario, the key is to stay consistent. Find a workout routine that fits your schedule and stick with it. Remember, sustainability is more important than perfection. By focusing on consistency, you’ll achieve long-term results and make fitness a lasting part of your lifestyle.

So, what’s your plan? Choose the schedule that works best for you and commit to it. Your future self will thank you!
